Ambassador of Guatemala to Korea
Guatemalan Ambassador Sara Angelina Solis Castaneda held a press conference to mark the 204th Anniversary of the Independence of Guatemala. The following is the excerpts of the Ambassador’s speech.
Located in the heart of Central America, with coasts on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Guatemala is a country full of history, culture and natural beauty For Korean travelers looking for an enriching tourism experience, Guatemala offers much more than exotic landscapes.
It is home to one of the most advanced and fascinating civilizations in human history: the Mayan Civilization.
With its majestic pyramids, mys-terious ancient cities and vibrant cultural legacy. Guatemala is an ideal destination for those who wish to explore the archaeological wealth and connect with the ancestral roots of humanity.
The Heart of the Mayan Civilization
Guatemala is known as the cradle of the Mayan civilization, a people who flourished between 2000 B.C. and the 16th Century, and who left a deep mark on world history. The Maya developed the most advanced hieroglyphic writing system in pre-Columbian America and made significant advances in mathematics and astronomy, including the Mayan calendar, which is more accurate than the Gregorian calendar currently in use They also built imposing city-states that extend across Guatemalan territory and beyond.
Among the most notable arch-aeological destinations is “Tikal,” one of the largest and most powerful Mayan cities of its time. Located in the Peten rainforest.
Tikal is a UNESCO World Heri-tage Site(1979), famous for its monumental pyramids that rise above the jungle canopy The experience of walking through its temples and plazas is like being transported thousands of years back in time, surrounded by lush nature and the echo of history.
Other equally impressive Mayan sites include “El Mirador”, located in northern Peten, Guatemala, is an important archaeological site consi-dered the cradle of the Preclassic (1000 B.C.-150 A.D.). It is noted for its monumental architecture, including pyramids such as La Danta, one of the largest in the world.
The site reveals an advanced social and urban organization, with complex systems of roads (sacbes) and sophi-sticated agricultural techniques. Its heyday occurred long before the known Mayan centers of the Classic, showing the early development of civilization in the region.
We also find Quirigua (UNESCO World Heritage Site. 1981), located in Izabal, a Mayan site from the Classic period (200-900 A.D.), famous for its monumental stone stelae, the tallest in the Mayan world These intricately carved sculptures recount historical and mythological events and highlight the political power of the city during its peak.
A Spiritual Journey Through Ancient Cultures
For Korean tourists, whose culture is deeply rooted in respect for traditions and ancestors, Guatemala offers a spiritual connection to the past. Guatemala’s indigenous people, direct descendants of the Mayans, have kept many of their customs, beliefs and languages alive over the centuries.
This allows visitors to not only admire the ancient ruins, but also witness the traditional ceremonies, rituals and markets that remain a vital part of daily life in many regions of the country.
An example of this is the town of “Chichicastenango”, home to one of the most famous indigenous markets in Latin America. Here, tourists can observe the syncretism between Mayan traditions and the Christian religion, as Mayan priests perform ancestral ceremonies in the church of Santo Tomas, a deeply evocative scene of the fusion of cultures.
Antigua Guatemala: History, Culture, Coffee and Colonial Beauty
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, Antigua Guatemala is one of the most emblematic cities in Guatemala Founded in 1543, it was the country’s colonial capital for 233 years, until an earthquake in 1773 led to the decision to move the capital to Guatemala City.
This historical legacy is reflected in its impressive baroque buildings, convents and plazas, which transport visitors back to colonial times.
Today Antiqua is not only a popular tourist destination, full of national and international restaurants, but also a vibrant cultural center that celebrates its Mayan and colonial roots Just 35km from the current capital (Guatemala City), Antigua Guatemala is known for its high-quality coffee, grown on nearby lands, which is integrated into the rich local gastronomic tradition.
Walking through its cobblestone streets, you can enjoy the views of the surrounding volcanoes and the hospitality of its inhabitants, making Antigua Guatemala a place where history, culture and coffee are uniquely intertwined.
The Richness of Guatemalan Coffee and Its Connection to Korea

In fact, a few years ago, some Guatemalan public schools included the Korean language in their school curriculum, a fact that will surely attract the attention of Korean tourists interested in cultural connections.
The Korean Community in Guate-mala: A Cultural Link for Half a Century
One of the most interesting and least known aspects for many Korean tourists is the presence of a vibrant Korean community in Guatemala For approximately 50 years, thousands of Koreans have made Guatemala their second homeland, establishing strong ties with the country.
Today, the Korean community in Guatemala is the largest in Central America and the Caribbean, and the fourth largest in all of Latin America
This community has contributed significantly to the economic and social development of Guatemala, establishing around 200 Korean companies in sectors such as manufacturing, textiles and tech-nology.
These companies not only boost the local economy, but also foster a constant cultural exchange between Korea and Guatemala.
This strong economic and cultural link between both countries is a testament to the deep respect and collaboration they have forged over the decades.
