by Paul Sobba Massaquoi Ambassador of the Republic of Sierra Leone
Following is the article by Sierra Leone Ambassador to Korea Paul Sobba Massaquoi, on the occasion of the 64th Independence Day of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961
On this day April 27 in 1961, Sierra Leone gained independence from the British Empire, emerging as a sovereign state and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, as its 2ist member and the 13th member to join the common wealth. After more than 150 years of British colonial rule, Sierra Leone became a sovereign nation at midnight on April 27th, 1961 when its green, white and blue flag was unfurled.
The Independence Day formally begun as the Duke of Kent handed over royal instruments recognizing Sierra Leone as an independent nation. Messages of welcome to the new government led by the first Prime Minister Sir Milton Margai, came from the British Prime Minister Herold Macmillan and from the Queen, who visited the new nation later that year. The event was marked by jubilation and dancing festivities throughout the land.
Since independence there have been many changes in the socio-political, and economic spheres.
The economic development after independence in 1961 has been marked by periods of growth, decline, and recovery, often influenced by both internal and external factors.
Initial growth slowed, particularly after the second half of the 1961 s, and was further disrupted by the devastating civil war in the early 1990s.
Post-war recovery has been gradual, with economic growth driven by the potential of five main areas: agriculture, fisheries, mining, tourism, and public infrastructure.
Mining of the minerals, especially iron ore, diamonds, gold, rutile, ilmenite, and bauxite, are the primary sources of foreign exchange.
There are also several opportunities for investment in physical and digital public infrastructure, as well as rare earth minerals.
Our government now focuses on public-private partnerships for significant infrastructural development projects in energy, water sanitation, roads, estuary and ports construction, improving on ICT and the telecommunications sector.
Our government also encourages investment in local industries like agro-fish processing, fruits and local beverage factories, other value-addition industries, and developing small and medium scale enterprises.
We are seeking investment in all these sectors to ignite economic growth and development in the country to be led by the private sector.
The diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and South Korea was established on June 25th, 1962 and since then, the two countries have enjoyed strong bilateral ties and there have been high-level exchanges that have occurred between Sierra Leone and the Republic of Korea.
To the highest visit was last year June 2024 when our President H. E. President Maada Bio visited Korea for the Korea-Africa Summit.
Trade between the two nations is mostly on fisheries products, this trend we are desirous to diversify into other areas of technological transfer as well as continuing the K-Rice belt initiative KOAFEC amongst others.
To you my fellow Sierra Leoneans both home and abroad, let me congratulate you on this day.
We must honor this important day, reflecting on our shared cultural heritage and historical origins as well as the fraternal bonds that binds us as a nation and in the true spirit of one love one country, one people.
I am not only proud to be a Sierra Leonean but very proud to be counted as a national of a resilient nation and heroic people.
Sierra Leone has emerged from the throes of a brutal and gruesome civil war, from a deadly Ebola epidemic, from a monstrous mudslide and landslide yet still we rose from these ashes and became reckoned with as a democratic and peaceful nation, serving as part of contingents to Africa Union peace keeping military missions eg (AMISOM) in post conflict zones, and support democratic transitions.
We have also gained a second inning at the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member category 2024-2025.
Participating in world peace negotiations and sustainable economically stable global world.
The development transition and accolades as a nation are manifold but we continue to evolve and frog leap to be at breast with the rest of the world in development, especially as an Ambassador in South Korea, I humbly would aspire to learn about the Saemaul Undong doctrine and transport its philosophy to my nation.
My ardent desire is to deepen the already existing cordial bilateral relations between our two nations, as my country turns 64 years old today April 27th, 2025.
In my personal reflection, I remain hopeful and will continue to pledge my love and loyalty to my country Sierra Leone; I vow to serve her faithfully at all times; I promise to defend her honour her good name; I will always work for her unity, peace, freedom and prosperity; and put her interest above all else.★
